Sometimes, your brain just disappears into howling abyss mode, AKA your brain is so blank that you can hear air howling as it moves. Your page just won’t fill with text. Your slide just won’t arrange itself. Your picture just won’t paint itself. The dreaded writer’s block.

You see this nonsense below? Those are three introductions to this blog post, each one failing to continue to the rest of the article. I wrote them down, and then just stopped. I couldn’t write any more. My brain told me that I sucked. These are examples of my writer’s block.

I hate it when professors assign participation marks, which so often happened in my seminar courses. Most other people had no problem with this. They quickly threw out seemingly insightful observations while I just absorbed it all. My professors probably interpreted my silence as not paying attention. But as I walked home, all these ideas came flying through my heads. Suggestions, rebuttals, new interpretations, questions. But I don’t get marked on that.
One of the toughest things is to find fresh ideas at the right time. Okay, maybe harder is putting these ideas into reality. Even so, the biggest questions for writers is still: “Where do you get your ideas?” Unfortunately, the Great Ideas Factory is still down for upgrades, so we have to make do with our own home versions. Our home versions don’t have a prompt delivery time either.
